My Garden Fowers
Years ago, shortly after my youngest son went to university, I was telling a neighbour about his achievement.
“Oh! I’ve heard of that. Univer City. It’s in America isn’t it?
Even now, when I’m writing the word, I have to stop myself spelling it with a C instead of the S, ha ha.

I’m happy you found it funny too. I thought my neighbour was cracking a joke at first and I laughed. Seeing her confused expression, I quickly stopped, and explained what I meant by university. She’d obviously never heard of it. That might sound strange to some of my readers. Yet, when I think back to my growing up years in Liverpool more than 50 years ago, I’d never heard of it either. Even though I passed a scholarship to go to Grammar School, I never heard of it there. Mind you, I did leave a few months before the exams. Maybe if I’d stayed, I would have learned more about it. Funnily enough, at the age of 40 I went back to college as an adult student, to get the exam certificates I should have earned at 16. I did eventually go on to study fo a degree.

No, it definitely isn’t. We should learn something new every day. Once we stop learning, we lose interest in life.

It’s odd that people, even educated people who know me well, mis-pronounce or misspell my name. Here are some strange variations: Marion, Mariam, Miriam, Mirian – Very puzzlng to me.

How strange that people you know well do that. The name Marian isn’t difficult. My brother always spells my name Carol, with no ‘e’ at the end. I’m often e-mailing him and always end with “Lots of Love Carole” , yet he’s never once got it right.
