How to handle Stress

A psychologist walked around a room while teaching stress management to an audience. As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected they’d be asked the “half empty or half full” question. Instead, with a smile on her face, she inquired, “How heavy is this glass of water?”

Answers called out ranged from 8 oz to 20 oz.

She replied, “The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my arm. If I hold it for a day, my arm will feel numb and paralyzed. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.”

She continued, ” The stresses and worries in life are like that glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens. Think about them for a bit longer and you begin to hurt. If you think about them all day long, you will feel paralyzed – incapable of doing anything.”

Don’t carry your stresses into the evening. As soon as possible let go of your worries. Remember to put the glass down. (Unknown Author)

I found this on Facebook and just had to share it with you.

About caroleparkes

My husband calls me a butterfly because I flit from one hobby to another. Apart from being a wife for 52 years, a mother of three sons, and a grandmother, I'm also an author, genealogist, amateur artist, a lover of most needlecrafts, and occasional poet. Of the above, my most enduring interest has been writing and I hope to be doing it well into old age.

I really like that adage. And sometimes when really stressed smashing the glass of water on the floor can be very stress releiving, albeit can be dangerous. 🙂

This is a great example of the long term effects of stress. It does put things into perspective without a doubt. Thought provoking share! 🙂

Thanks Carole, I’ve reblogged this with comments. About half a lifetime ago I learned to set stress and anger down as soon as possible because it was not worth my precious life-time for care and feeding. I do find that some resentments seem reasonable but I no longer am willing to care – others can do that for me if they want to.

  9. And wash all your blues away…

I used to think that all those brilliant folks out there in the world knew it. Rich folks knew it. Movie stars and music stars had to know it. Heck, the guy in the Marlboro commercial must know it. I kept trying. Good jobs, a decent education, smart and pretty wife, beautiful kids. All the steps in the search to gain the knowlege. And then after a lot of years I finally got it. The secret. The secret to life, the secret to happiness.

There ain’t no secret. That’s just it. Live it every day to the max. No one can guarantee you tomorrow. It all depends on how long you have to hold that silly glass. You do the best you can and scrap the excuses. If you have to carry that glass around all day, so be it. Don’t cry about it. Do the best you can.

And oh by the by, my child bride’s mum was a war bride from Widnes. The child bride visited there in the 60’s and has made me promise to take her back before we need pall bearers.

Life can be as difficult as you want to make it, or you can just stop worrying and let things resolve themselves. Of course it does help if you choose your course wisely, and don’t get yourself in too much trouble to begin with. Think before you act is wise advice, but all too often we act in haste. You are right though, just live each day the best you can. I hope you enjoy your trip back.

Yes, it makes perfect sense. I hadn’t heard it either but it’s one of those things that it resonates when you hear it. Thanks Carole and happy 2015!

  12. Forgiveness is not for the forgiven…. it is for the one who forgives. Letting go of the stress and anger benefits the one who forgives much more than it does the forgiven. This post can apply to so many negatives in our life! Thanks for reminding me to let go , let go, let go! I can feel the stress leaving my body as I type. lol

You are so right! There is little to compare with the feeling you get when you decide to forgive. It is so liberating.

      • : ) I went to a seminar on forgiveness about 10 years ago, the things I learned were so incredibly life changing. I am not stress free nor have I forgiven everyone in my life…I am still carrying around a lot of useless anger and resentment but compared to before the seminar I am a completely different person and it is liberating! Now if I can just finish the job!!! lol lol lol
